About the role

About Aptible

Our Mission

For developers at high growth companies who want to focus on building products and shipping code, Aptible automates the security of resources across their entire cloud infrastructure. Our platform as a service is used by thousands of developers, especially those at digital health startups, to ship complex architectures without needing to stop and think about security, compliance, or IaaS best practices. As we move forward, we are expanding our impact by helping developers to secure any cloud resource they select for a particular job, regardless of which cloud infrastructure provider they choose.

Our Team

Aptible is a fully distributed company, and we’ve been remote since 2013. We’ve grown our customer base considerably since then by focusing on great product. Our team is small but we’re growing fast, and we’re starting to hire for roles and teams we’ve never before had.

This role is an opportunity to be an early contributor and leader at a company that has a substantial revenue base relative to our modest team size and is investing to scale out a company that will accelerate growth.

Our Aptible handbook is where we've set out to help current and prospective Aptible team members get a clear sense of who we are. We endeavor to speak publicly and openly about ourselves, though we do have a handbook-internal where we discuss proprietary matters internally. We invite you to read the handbook to help you determine if Aptible might be a fit for you, and to inspire any questions you'd like to ask us about our team or mission.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

We prioritize diversity within our team and value different perspectives, educational backgrounds, and life experiences. We encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

About this Role

Aptible automates cloud security and compliance so that the developers who use us can focus on what they do best: building great software. We serve fast-growing startups and companies that are scaling out their operations. We have an ambitious mission – to help developers do their best work by empowering them to use any cloud infrastructure securely.

We won’t achieve our mission without building a thriving and productive high talent density team. Though we are just about 15 employees today, we expect to significantly grow by the end of the year in order to help us achieve our mission and strategy.

This is why we are looking for our first People Operations hire to help us successfully grow our team and to ensure our team is executing well. The People Operations Manager role is a unique opportunity to be a high-impact, early member of Aptible, while continuing to develop the skills necessary to become an effective People Ops or Business Ops leader. Reporting directly to our COO, you will be responsible for helping Aptible achieve its mission by ensuring we can quickly fill every open job, onboard team members successfully, and design training and cultural programs that will help us improve execution while improving employee well-being and happiness.

Successful candidates have likely managed or participated in all aspects of the employee lifecycle, especially designing cultural programs, onboarding activities, and employer handbook content creation, and may have some technical recruiting experience as well.

Your Impact

  • Our current people ops strategy is simple: grow the team effectively, not just by hiring but also onboarding and quickly integrating team members so that we can accelerate our pace to achieving our ambitious mission. You’ll certainly help us carry out this people ops strategy by being the recruiting and sourcing lead for roles on our hiring roadmap, driving alignment around job descriptions, interview processes, sourcing strategies, and compensation packages. However, even more important will be designing onboarding programs that will help our new team members get started at Aptible quickly.
  • You’ll own our hiring roadmap, working with hiring managers and execs to prioritize hires, research compensation, budget for new hires, and to create sourcing strategies (internal or working with external recruiters) to ensure we fill roles
  • You’ll ensure we are meeting our goals with respect to compensation and talent management, and create and publish transparent documentation for how we will meet these goals
  • You’ll lead the program (content and logistics) for quarterly team meetups and support additional small team meetups, that support the growth and development of our team, strategy, mission, and culture
  • You’ll lead the administration of performance management and work with managers and execs to follow up on the results and our progress towards maintaining a high talent density
  • You’ll regularly capture and report on data through surveys and interviews about employee experience, and share our results and learning externally
  • You’ll lead contributions to our public-facing employee handbook to help improve transparency by open sourcing our culture
  • You’ll manage the entire employee lifecycle, including employee onboarding and offboarding
  • You’ll help manage our PEO as well as all our payroll and benefits systems, taking responsibility for our HR needs, and be the first point of contact for employees who have questions
  • As we grow, you’ll build and manage a People Ops team that is responsive to the needs of the organization and our current people strategy

Your Strengths

  • Technical Recruiting Skills: You likely have experience recruiting and sourcing for some of the most challenging roles to recruit for, including senior engineers, marketing, and even developer relations
  • People Ops Experience: You’ve had experience working cross-functionally on broader people ops and HR initiatives and are excited to cover the entirety of people operations.
  • People Content Creation Skills: You’ve helped design content, learning programs, or other materials including blog posts, presentations, emails, about us pages, employee handbooks, onboarding guides, etc. that are intended to improve a company’s “employer brand” among job candidates and/or accelerate a team’s performance, expand its culture, or report on organizational health
  • Startup Experience: You’ve worked in a fast-paced environment and found ways to improve the company, regardless of whether the company was aggressively recruiting at the time.
  • Verbal and Written Communication Skills: You enjoy actively listening to and communicating with people to understand their needs and gain their trust. You have experience drafting clear communications that demonstrate discretion, good judgment, and attention to detail.
  • Project Management Skills: You have experience running several projects at once in a dynamic environment. You’re comfortable working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, taking initiative to move projects forward and deliver results on time.
  • Problem Solving Skills: You have experience analyzing data to understand trends, develop recommendations for action, and engage in strategy discussions.
  • Work Ethic: You have a track record of personal accountability, and a high standard of integrity and professionalism. You’ve demonstrated resilience and a desire to succeed in the face of new and/or unforeseen challenges.

Compensation

We set compensation based on benchmarks for comparable companies and positions. Using this data, the target salary range for this position is $125,000 - $172,000/year, based on experience and skill level.

Accordingly, Aptible endeavors to pay every employee a base salary in line with 90th Percentile total compensation for their personal market and Aptible's market. Our Interview Process

We seek to make the experience of interviewing with us as delightful, efficient, fair, respectful, and transparent as possible.

A typical process at Aptible might include the following steps, and can take up to 3 weeks to complete. Note that these steps may vary depending on your role, and details will be provided to you early on in the application process.

  1. An introduction to Aptible with the hiring manager (30 minutes via Zoom)
  2. A discussion-based interview with an Aptible team member (45-60 minutes via Zoom)
  3. A take-home work sample exercise (You will be compensated for completing this.)
  4. A discussion-based interview with an Aptible team member (45-60 minutes via Zoom)
  5. References (Ideally 3 former managers, Conducted asynchronously by Aptible)

We believe that the work sample exercise is an important part of the process, in that it gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills in a concrete way. We take the time to design these exercises such that they: a) give you a view into the actual work you'd do at Aptible, and b) are standardized, so every candidate is evaluated using the same criteria.

We try to move as quickly as possible, but if you have any time constraints, please let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate.

If you have a disability or special need that requires accommodation, please notify the hiring manager or coordinator for the role you are applying to, and we will reach out soon to see how we may be able to assist.
